Rabindranath Tagore's Nobel Prize stolen

In a burglary at the Uttarayan complex of Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan, the Nobel Prize [ Images ] medal, a watch, a bangle and important citations belonging to Rabindranath Tagore [ Images ] were stolen on Wednesday night.

West Bengal [ Images ] Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee ordered an inquiry into the theft on Thursday morning.

Tagore had received the Nobel Prize in 1913 for literature.

The theft was detected in the morning when the university reopened after a day's break, Bhattacharjee said in Kolkata [ Images ].

The burglars had sneaked into the museum by breaking open the window railings, state Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Chayan Mukherjee said, adding that some people, including the guards had been detained.

The CM said that he talked to Visva Bharati Vice-Chancellor Sujit Basu and senior police officers about the incident.

The Uttarayan complex was closed to visitors for the day as a large number of policemen encircled the entire premises.
