The cursed sisters of Titanic
(Reader Contribution to
10 of the Worst Ship Disasters Ever)

Though the loss of life is much smaller than Titanic's, her sister ships, Olympic and Britannic, launched in 1910 and 1914 respectfully, both seem to carry the White Star Line curse. Olympic collided with a British warship in 1911, but her watertight compartments allowed her to limp back to port with no loss of life or injuries. Olympic was 500 nautical miles from Titanic on April 14th, 1912, and received a distress call, but was too far away. After the disaster, many changes were made to Olympic and their sister ship, Britannic, still under construction. With the onset of WWI, Britannic was stripped of her luxury and refitted as a hospital ship. Though denied by the White Star Line, Britannic's original name was to be Gigantic, but changed after Titanic's disaster. Britannic was sunk by a mine in 1916 off the island of Kea with only 30 casualties. Worth noting, is the story of Violet Jessop, who was a stewardess on the Olympic during her collision, then survived the sinking of Titanic, and was a nurse aboard the Britannic. She jumped from a lifeboat about to be sucked into Britannic's still spinning propellers, and all in the boat were killed, she was knocked unconscious and pulled aboard another boat. She is known as a very lucky, or very UNlucky person, depending on how you look at it. Many films about Titanic include characters based on her inspirational bravery during the disaster.
