Can you guess what happened to the iPhone that fell six stories down an elevator shaft?
I was carrying my wife's brand-new iPhone 4s as we waited for the elevator at our hotel in Waikiki. (She wanted to leave her handbag in the room.)
Since I use a wheelchair, I balanced the iPhone on my lap. Just as the elevator doors opened, the iPhone slipped out, skidded across the carpet and jumped down the space between the elevator and the elevator shaft.
It looked just like a mouse ducking into a hole in the wall when someone turned on a light. Or as if it were tied to a string that someone was pulling from under the elevator car.
Cursing myself, I went with her to the front desk, where we explained what happened and asked if there was anything they could do.
After conferring with the hotel's management, the decided to call their elevator service company and have them take a look at the bottom of the shaft.
After an hour or so we got a call: They found the phone. It wasn't damaged except for a tiny nick in the screen.
My wife picked it up from them and checked. The phone works perfectly.
Kudos to Apple for a great design and to the Queen Kapiolani Hotel for going beyond the call of duty.
