Strange scientific theories and hypotheses

(Reader Contribution to 10 Weird Science Facts you didn't know)

Science can be sometimes strange, atleast for the common man. From suggestions, that we have evolved from apes to theories that link every human being on the earth, science often forces us to doubt the things it says. The world is full of mysteries. The innate desire of man to explain and understand every phenomenon in this world ,gives birth to many scientific theories .Some of these theories stand the test of time and eventually find acceptance among the learned and some are discarded. Some of these theories are quite easy to understand ,but some are too weird.Take a look at a few theories that would amaze you.
1.THE THEORY OF PARALLEL UNIVERSES
The theory that states that there is no single universe and no single reality. As Professor M.R.Franks' book on parallel universe states ,this theory assumes that every single conceivable energy state exists. There may be infinite number of universes and each my be quite different from one another. In one universe the earth may exist with one moon ,in other, two moons and in a third with no moon at all.Parallel universes were first postulated by Hugh Everett in 1957.Since then cosmologists have been interested in it,though some physicists debunk this theory as fiction.
2.THE PANSPERMIA THEORY
This theory about how life originated on earth suggests that the seeds of life were brought to earth by meteorites ,asteroids etc.Panspermia essentially believes that life exists throughout the universe. As wikipedia puts it-
Panspermia proposes that life that can survive the effects of space, such as extremophile bacteria, become trapped in debris that is ejected into space after collisions between planets that harbor life and Small Solar System Bodies (SSSB). Bacteria may travel dormant for an extended amount of time before colliding randomly with other planets or intermingling withprotoplanetary disks. If met with ideal conditions on a new planets' surfaces, the bacteria become active and the process of evolution begins. Panspermia is not meant to address how life began, just the method that may cause its sustenance.
Though there is no evidence for panspermia ,it does suggest the existence of alien life.
3.THE GARBAGE THEORY
This is the funniest scientific theory I have ever come across.Suggested by an Austrian- born Professor of astronomy at Cornell University ,Thomas Gold, this theory was an accidental panspermic theory of origin of life on earth .It says that life on earth might have spread from a pile of waste products accidentally dumped on Earth long ago by extraterrestrials.

4.THE SIMULATION HYPOTHESIS
Aliens may be computer geniuses .If they aren't then what Nick Bostrom suggested may be wrong. The simulation hypothesis promoted by Nick and others proposes that the whole universe may be one big computer simulation by intelligent aliens. It essentially states that reality is nothing but an illusion.Nick suggests that if it is possible to simulate entire inhabited planets or even entire universes on a computer, and that such simulated people can be fully conscious, then the sheer number of such simulations likely to be produced by any sufficiently advanced civilization (taken together with his Strong Self-Sampling Assumption) makes it extremely likely that we are in fact currently living in such a simulation.

5..THE CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE THEORY
This theory draws comparison between a mechanical clock and the universe. It suggests that universe is like a mechanical clock wound-up by God ,with the laws of physics as its gears making everything in world to be completely determinable(this was before the advent of quantum theory). The clockwork theory distinguished itself from other explain-how-the-universe-works theories by limiting the role of God to just setting the universe into motion .This theory was opposed by arguments in favour of free will, and other scientific principles. The suggestion that everything can be determined is rejected by quantum theory.

6.THE DESIGNER UNIVERSE THEORY
Propose by John Gribbin ,the designer theory suggested that our universe could have been designed an intelligent and technologically advanced alien race.Discussed in his 2010 book ,
In search of the multiverse: Parallel Worlds, Hidden Dimensions, and the Ultimate Quest for the Frontiers of Reality, this theory said that the architects of the universe could use blackholes as potential universe manufacturing units.

7.The ZOO HYPOTHESIS
One of the few hypotheses put forward to Fermi's question on why aliens are still not contacting us ,the zoo hypothesis suggested that aliens would generally avoid making their presence known to humanity, or avoid exerting an influence on human development, somewhat akin to zookeepers observing animals in a zoo, or experimental scientists observing a study that closer examination would ruin. The supporters of this theory believe that we are being secretly monitored by aliens from space and they would contact us as soon as we reach a certain level of advancement and maturity.
8.THE DOUGHNUT THEORY OF THE UNIVERSE
Our universe is shaped like a doughnut-that's what this theory states.Proposed by Dr.Alexi Starobinski alongwith Dr.Yakov Zeldovich ,the theory had its origin right after the discovery of Cosmic Microwave Background . Based on the data collected by the COBE satellite -launched to study the radiation of the universe-scientists suggested that the universe has a complex geometry of a 3-dimensional torus. The COBE revealed that there existed small discrepancies in temperature throughout the universe and the CMB appears to be more concentrated in one direction than the other. This apparent difference led the scientists to come to a conclusion about the shape of the universe.
