Munich's Feldherrnhalle- The Nazis' Holiest Shrine
(Reader Contribution to 12 of the World's Most Fascinating Ruins)
The site of Hitler's failed 1923 putsch attempt where 16 Nazis and 4 police were killed. 10 years later Hitler took power and made this the site of his annual march to commemorate the event. A Nazi eagle was placed on it with two 24 hour SS honour guards- one had to give the Hitler salute to pass by. The link is to a site that shows dozens of then-and-now photos.
