The Robber Robber Who Asked For A Check

In Tunbridge Wells, Kent, UK, in the mid-nineties, there had been a string of armed robberies at banks and building societies. Local cops it was three brothers from the area who were perpetrating them, but had no evidence to prove them guilty. One of the three brothers, Michael, was not quite as sharp as the others, and so was always relegated to getaway-driving duties, and always got a smaller cut of the loot. Annoyed at this fact, he decided to do a big job on his own. He walked into a local Barclay's Bank with a hunting knife and told the cashier to hand over the cash. Recognizing the robber from police photos sent to all the banks in the area, the cashier explained that the bank was awaiting a delivery of cash, and only had a very small amount of money on the premises. She suggested that she could write the robber a check, which he agreed to. After asking him to spell out his name and handing over a bogus check for £50000 (roughly $80k), she watched him walk out and called the cops (on the recorded emergency call you can actually hear her trying not to laugh). Police swooped on the scene, only to see Michael strolling into a NatWest bank just across the road. (The Barclays is less than 100 yards from the Police Station!) Michael then attempted to deposit his check, for cash, while teary eyed police officers burst in and arrested him. Apparently even the judge who sentenced Michael to time in a mental institution couldn't help an involuntary outburst of laughter during his sentencing.
