My Braces Made Me Sleepwalk
(Reader Contribution to
10 Unbelievable Sleepwalking Stories)
I used to sleepwalk as a kid, and still do in rare occasions.
When I was 15, my braces were removed, and I was given a retainer, to be worn at night. But somehow, my mouth didn't quite like it. So every evening, I would put the retainer in my mouth, and every morning, I would find it in its box next to the sink.
To prevent this from happening again, I put a wet cloth in front of my bed so I'd wake up if I'd start sleepwalking. This didn't work, even though I am usually a very light sleeper. I kept finding the retainer in its box, either next to my sink or in the bathroom, depending on where I'd left the box it was kept in.
One night, I dreamed I was rinsing my retainer downstairs in the scullery. The next morning, I found out I hadn't just dreamed it, but I had really done it. So I had gotten up from my bed in my room upstairs, had walked through the corridor, down the wooden stairs, through the hall, through the living room (which has a door that slams shut after being opened, but I didn't wake up from that!), through the double-locked scullery door, and I had rinsed my retainer in the sink. When my mum got up in the morning, she found all the lights out and all the doors closed and locked, like they had been the evening before. But my retainer was in its box on the tumble-drier next to the sink in the scullery!
