The Shortest-lived State in History: 24 hours
Inhabited mostly by current Ukrainians, the state of Carpatho-Ukraine must have been the shortest-lived in history. It existed for only 24 hours, declaring its independence from Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939, and then, formally annexed by Hungary one day later.

The region had been autonomous within Czechoslovakia from late 1938 to March 15, 1939, but as soon as it declared its independence, it was occupied by Hungary, remaining under their control until the Nazi occupation of Hungary in 1944. The first (and only) president of the ‘Republic of Carpatho-Ukraine' was the reverend Avhustyn Voloshyn.
